Undergraduate Teacher Training

Undergraduate Initial Teacher Training is an alternative route into teaching for prospective Primary school teachers who do not possess a degree.

This is a popular route for college leavers as well as career changers as they can choose to train to teach close to where they live whilst studying in a smaller cohort than offered on a university course.

There are full-time programmes – taking three to four years to complete - or part-time courses available which will require longer to complete. This route into Primary school teaching can include the option of subject specialism.

Degrees with opt-in QTS are available in certain subjects such as Modern Foreign Languages, Computing and Physics. Applications are generally made through UCAS for this route.

Entry Requirements for Primary Undergraduate:

For most Undergraduate Primary teacher training courses, prospective trainees will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent (Grade 9 - 4 or A* - C), along with 112 UCAS points. A level entry requirements and UCAS points will vary depending on the prospective trainee’s chosen training provider.

Haybridge Alliance SCITT:

Undergraduate students training with Haybridge Alliance SCITT spend one and a half days learning the theory of teaching, with one and half days dedicated to studying and enrichment activities. The remaining two days are spent in placement schools, observing experts in their fields before slowly taking on classroom responsibilities and putting their theoretical knowledge into practice.

The Teachers' Standards form the basis of assessments of undergraduate teachers’ progress throughout the year. Each half term our School-Based Trainers refer to our step-by-step framework for assessing undergraduate teachers, which explicitly states the competencies trainees are required to demonstrate, not just in their teaching, but overall as a teacher. It is used to support regular summative assessments and used formatively to identify where training opportunities are needed. This framework is shared directly with trainees so that they are well-equipped to self-evaluate and prioritise targets for their continued development.

Train to teach primary students in a rewarding career choice

Primary routes focus on the study of teaching in all Primary National Curriculum subjects, with emphasis on the core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science. Our Primary courses allow applicants the opportunity to study a range of ages, ranging from 3-11 (Undergraduate) or 5-11 (Postgraduate) and the distinctive pedagogies encountered in reception, nursery, KS1 and KS2 classrooms, as well as a KS3 experience.
