Train to be a Secondary Teacher

Secondary Initial Teacher Training routes focus on the study of teaching a specific secondary subject chosen by the prospective trainee.

Secondary trainees will have the opportunity to study a range of ages; for most subjects, this will be between ages 11 – 16, with 17-18 if the school placement includes a Sixth Form. Subjects such as Social Studies, Business and Psychology will observe students from GCSE level. In order to obtain QTS, all Secondary trainees will be required to observe a day of lessons in alternative placements.

Trainees will learn to follow the Teacher Standards and will be observed throughout their training in order to develop practical insight and skills in the effective teaching and assessment of young children through practical school-based experience.

Available subject specialisms will differ depending on the chosen training provider. Most ITT providers offer:

Core Content Framework (CCF):

The Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes follow the Core Content Framework (CCF) - a framework to support trainee teacher development. The ITT Core Content Framework aligns with the Early Career Framework (ECF) to establish an entitlement to a 3-or-more year structured package of support for all new teachers at the start of their careers. Drawing on evidence-based research, the CCF sets out the content that Initial Teacher Training providers and their partnerships must use when designing and delivering their Initial Teacher Training curriculum.

Trainees will be offered a series of learning experiences linking different perspectives of Secondary teaching to aid the development of their professional skills in the classroom and lead them towards successfully achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by meeting the required National Teacher Standards.
