Train to Become a Teacher

Initial Teacher Training (ITT) is a strand of the Department for Education’s ‘Golden Thread’ of Professional Development.

Haybridge Teaching School Hub understands that great teachers make great schools; we believe that school-based Initial Teacher Training programmes bring the best new teachers into the profession. Immersing trainees in a school environment enables them to think critically and make evidence-supported decisions in the early stages of their career.

Our region has excellent provision for Initial Teacher Training leading towards either Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or QTS Only. Part time and full time programmes are available across both Primary and Secondary as well as a number of subject and specialism areas. Postgraduate trainee teachers can also gain QTS through Assessment Only (AO) and Apprenticeship routes.

Routes into teaching:

There are several pathways into Early Years, Primary and Secondary teaching in the UK. Individuals are able to decide which route is best suited to their skills, personal circumstances and career ambition. To become a qualified teacher in state-maintained schools across the UK, prospective trainees will need to undertake Initial Teacher Training (ITT) or Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Entry is generally competitive, but less so for shortage subjects such as Maths, Physics and Languages. Completion of an ITT course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England and Wales.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS):

If an individual is looking to work as a teacher in a maintained Primary, Secondary or Special school, they will need to apply for a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This is a professional qualification which is awarded to trainees in order for them to teach and work across sectors in the UK. It is also crucial to gain QTS if an individual aims to qualify for certain advancement and leadership opportunities within the UK school system.
There are a variety of entry requirements in order to achieve Qualified Teacher Status which are specific to the route an individual chooses to take into teaching i.e. the entry requirements for a Secondary Postgraduate course are different to that of a Primary Undergraduate.

What do Initial Teacher Training Programmes Offer?

Initial Teacher Training programmes vary slightly from provider to provider, but most will offer:

  • 120 days of practical classroom experience in two schools

  • Academic study, giving prospective trainees the knowledge and understanding to teach successfully

  • Experienced professional mentoring and tutoring in classroom management

  • Ongoing assessment of teaching skills towards a final assessment against a set of teacher standards, which will lead to QTS.

Haybridge Teaching School Hub works in collaboration with all Primary and Secondary schools across Sandwell and Dudley. We can offer impartial advice and guidance to explore what the teacher training options are and can signpost individuals to the relevant teacher training providers in the area they live or want to work.

All teacher training providers within our Hub area collaborate with each other and with the Haybridge Teaching School Hub to ensure our trainees are given quality training and support to make them into the best teachers they can be for our local schools.
